Selecting a shade is always a demanding procedure that needs to consider several parameters. Especially with respect to shade (or shades) to select for external thermal insulation, tracking down the ideal - or simply the best suitable - shade is not hard, as long as certain conditions are considered.

We have already stressed the importance of external thermal insulation in our times. Not only it relates to energy saving and protecting buildings against freezing, humidity, extreme heat and deterioration over time, but also to the visual improvement it can provide.

The ideal shade to be used for thermal insulation can be found in an exceptionally wide range, able to meet countless individual requirements (regarding space, climate, style and personal taste). It resembles the choice of new furniture or custom made drapes, a truly creative process, besides its functional aspect.

How to choose a shade suitable for the exterior surfaces of your building
There are seven implicit rules to this end; apply them and you will find yourselves closer to the discovery of the optimal shades for the exterior surfaces of your building. Here they are:

- Very dark shades are suitable for buildings with specific purposes (an industrial style building, for instance). Generally, it is best that these are avoided in ordinary houses, for the sake of aesthetic appeal.

- As a rule, avoid warm shades, unless such a choice is documented through a comprehensive architectural proposal. Exceptions to this rule are Cool Facades from the ΒΙΟCLIMA CLIMAWALL FACADE COLLECTION fandeck. They may be dark shades but due to their composition, they offer high reflectance of the energy they receive through incident solar radiation on their surfaces. Their benefit for the building is increased energy saving and less requirements in terms of cooling / heating expenses.

  - Check the environment, the surrounding space and the neighbourhood. Selecting a shade already present in the environment is always a reasonable, often appropriate choice.

-Neutral and earthly shades are considered safe options and they look even better if combined with shades from the same palette (e.g. shades of darker hues).

- Pay special attention to structural components such as rooftops, windows or gutters. These will be framed from the shade of the thermal insulation. These should somehow match, as they cannot be painted as well.

- Pastel shades are easily identifiable. They furnish buildings with a special character. They radiate joy and optimism, so they perfectly blend with light and highlight a modern character.

- The shade of the thermal insulation always tells something about the building’s tenants. What’s your own story? Which message you want to send out? It could be about sustainability, harmony or sobriety. Or perhaps you want to be unnoticed.

Thermal insulation materials
In addition to the thermal insulation shade, being the final choice before thermal insulation installation, a point of particular importance for exterior thermal insulation is the proper selection of the final render. Enter organic renders, decorative paste plasters, used on exterior as well as interior masonry. The focus of this article is thermal insulation plasters.
The BIOCLIMA ClimaTop® , is a reliable family of renders. Its advantages are timeless resistance to UV radiation, high reflectivity, fire resistance and water repellence.

Inspiration and proposed shades for thermal insulation

BIOCLIMA offers consumers with an extended range of shade options, thanks to BIOCLIMA CLIMAWALL FACADE COLLECTION, a collection of 285 shades for shading ClimaTop paste plasters. The Facade Collection incorporates a range featuring 58 shade families, especially engineered for Greece. The shades contained in the above mentioned fandeck are distinguished in Perfect whites, Greys & Tinted neutrals, Naturals & Cool Facades. Some of the shades frequently selected from this fandeck are BFC123 Greyson, off-white ones such as BFC101 White, and those in sand yellow, such as BFC242 Sandrock.

A tasteful and discreet choice would be a moderate mint green (BFC335 Mint), as well as an ocean blue (BFC357 Ocean), reminiscent of the Greek seas. However, a particularly safe choice would be BFC158 ICE, a neutral ice grey.
